The Miles Davis Quintet was the definitive jazz small group of the 1960s, formed in 1964 with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. Their "Second Great Quintet" recordings redefined jazz improvisation and rhythm, pioneering what critics called "time, no changes" — floating melodic lines over unfixed harmonic structures that still sound revolutionary today.
